Coming in to BLAST Open London, few would have expected that G2 would be the ones to walk away as champions.
An incredible run for them, they had to beat some of the best teams in the world in order to do so, with the likes of Spirit, FaZe, FURIA, and Vitality all falling to their devastating firepower on the way to lifting the trophy.
After the blockbuster 3-2 grand final win over Vitality, we sat down with HeavyGod to discuss what it meant to lift his first trophy, win his first MVP award, and how G2 managed to sway the crowd from cheering for mezii to cheering for them.
Congratulations on the win, how does it feel?
It's good, I'm good. I'm satisfied, it's my first trophy and my first MVP and I'm so grateful for my team.
You mentioned the MVP award there, is that something you ever thought about getting?
No, I've never really thought about it. I just wanted to win this event as a team and obviously, the MVP is an addition that I'm really grateful for. We didn't have a lot of expectations, but we tried our best and pushed ourselves to the limit.
Now that you've won an event, do you think expectations will change?
I don't know, we're still a young team that has only been together for two months so we still have a lot of work to do together. It will take a while for us to build the perfect stratbook and get perfect chemistry, but we're all working hard for it to happen.
It's quite an inexperienced team you have in G2 all things considered, do you think what you and MATYS have done especially today says a lot about the strength of talent outside of the top level?
Yeah, tier two is really strong and they are all fighting a lot with tier one. Some of them also have better map pools than the teams.
MATYS did amazing in tier two and I was watching him in fnatic, he's a really good aimer and a really good guy.
By the end of the game the crowd was cheering for G2 instead of their hometown hero, what does that mean for you guys? Could you feel the energy?
The crowd has been amazing all weekend. I really appreciate the love they gave us and all the support, and I think because I was part of the UK scene with Endpoint and playing for them, they've known me for a while and I appreciate them. It was the best.
Considering the teams you beat here in London and in the event as a whole, do you think teams will now have to take G2 more seriously?
I don't know, maybe it's an individual thing where some teams think that we're weaker than we are and other teams think we're stronger. I don't know, it's a tough question. Either way, we will try to do our best no matter what tournament it is or when it is, we'll keep putting hours in to continue the journey and we really want to do more damage.
Looking ahead, the Major is coming up, does winning here make you think about what might be possible there?
Yeah, of course. Winning a Major is the number one goal, it's our number one goal and we want to make it happen.
